Salford is the main town of the City of Salford, Greater Manchester, England. Historically it was part of the county of Lancashire until the creation of the county of Greater Manchester in 1974. The city lies to the west of the centre of the city of Manchester, the adjoining cities are divided by the River Irwell. At the 2001 census, it had a population of 216,103.
