Sakonnet River

The Sakonnet River is not a river but an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean in Rhode Island in the U.S.A. The 14 mile-long (23 km) saltwater strait separates Aquidneck Island from the mainland on the east. Communities along the Sakonnet River include Tiverton and Little Compton on the mainland, and Portsmouth and Middletown on the island. The Sakonnet River Bridge connects Portsmouth and Tiverton near its northmost end. There is a small uninhabited island, Gould Island, where it widens as it meets the sea, and a lighthouse at the very southern end of the river called Sakonnet Point Light.
