Saint

In general, the term Saint refers to someone who is exceptionally virtuous and holy. It can be applied to both the living and the dead and is an acceptable term in most of the world's popular religions. The Saint is held up by the community as an example of how we all should act, and his or her life story is usually recorded for the edification of future generations.

The process of officially recognizing a person as a saint, practiced by some churches, is called canonization, though many Protestant groups use the less formal, broader usage seen in Scripture to include all who are faithful.

LIFE Photo Archive available on Google Image Search

The Zapruder film of the Kennedy assassination; The Mansell Collection from London; Dahlstrom glass plates of New York and environs from the 1880s; and the entire works left to the collection from LIFE photographers Alfred Eisenstaedt, Gjon Mili, and Nina Leen. These are just some of the things you'll see in Google Image Search today. We're excited to announce the availability of never-before-seen images from the LIFE photo archive. This effort to bring offline images online was inspired by our mission to organize all the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful. This collection of newly-digitized images includes photos and etchings produced and owned by LIFE dating all the way back to the 1750s.Only a very small percentage of these images have ever been published. The rest have been sitting in dusty archives in the form of negatives, slides, glass plates, etchings, and prints. We're digitizing them so that everyone can easily experience these fascinating moments in time. Today about 20 percent of the collection is online; during the next few months, we will be adding the entire LIFE archive ? about 10 million photos. It has been a thrill for us to explore this archive, filled with images captured by LIFE's famous photographers. See masters like Alfred Eisenstaedt and Margaret Bourke-White documenting pivotal world events, capturing the evolution of lifestyles and fashions, and opening windows into the lives of celebrities and everyday people. One of our favorites is this classic Eisenstaedt image of children watching a puppet show.Alfred snapped this in 1963, at the climax of Guignol's "Saint George and the Dragon" in the Tuileries Garden in Paris. Just as the dragon is slain, some children cry out in a combination of horror and delight, while others are taken aback in shock. Every child is consumed with emotion, masterfully captured by Eisenstaedt's camera. These amazing photos are now blended into our Image Search results along with other images from across the web.Once you are in the archive, you'll also notice that you can access a rich full-size, full-screen version of each image simply by clicking on the picture itself in the landing page. If you decide you really like one of these images, high-quality framed prints can be purchased from LIFE at the click of a button. Think of the holiday gift possibilities! It doesn't get much easier than that.So please take a look for yourself and experience these great photos. Your exploration will be limited only by your imagination and your desire to keep on clicking. Be sure to check back often as more photos from the LIFE archive will be added regularly to Google Image Search. We hope that you enjoy them as much as we do!Posted by Paco Galanes, Software Engineer

The New Narcocultura

Interesting "Letter from Mexico: Days of the Dead," by Alma Guillermoprieto, illuminating the narcotraficante culture in Mexico. Along the edges of the packed street, young men took quick snorts of glue and sometimes wept. A thin tattooed and pierced man with terrible skin was the only one of the many young toughs present who was willing to talk to me, and his amiability may have had something to do with the fact that he had just absent-mindedly assembled a joint about the size of a Robusto and was now wreathed in its smoke. The Holy Death had restored to him the love of the excruciatingly shy woman at his side, the man said, and he was now Death?s devotee forever. At the front of the crowd, banks of flowers to rival those laid at Princess Diana?s grave paid tribute to the skeleton. Half hidden by the flowers was a large, clear plastic death figure, and behind it was a sound system at which one of Queta?s sons would soon lead the Rosary. Behind that, Queta cackled in answer to a question. Yes, it was true that the Catholic Church disapproved of her ?Little Skinny One,? she said. ?But have you noticed how empty their churches are?? Queta?s genius has been to create out of her Catholic faith an inclusive syncretic ritual: a Rosary, which is recited complete with Hail Marys and the Lord?s Prayer; special prayers for those in jail; and a culminating, quasi-Pentecostal moment when the faithful all lift their effigy to Heaven to ?charge it with energy.? It is a cult, Queta says, accurately, that does not discriminate. A Catholic priest might extend grudging absolution to those who confess that they have just sold several grams of crystal meth to a bunch of twelve-year-olds, but only at Queta?s Rosary can you be blessed on a monthly basis without the matter of how you earn a living ever coming up. Queta, naturally enough, denies that the Santa Muerte is a devotion for drug traffickers?one more element of the narcocultura. Why, then, I wondered, was it perceived as such outside Tepito? ?Ha!? she exclaimed. ?Because every single time one of them is arrested or killed they find my Little Skinny One on their altar!? From the storefront next to the shrine, where she sells candles and other devotional objects for the cult, she blew another kiss and called out to her patron saint, ?Preciosa!? "Days of the Dead."...

WARNING-DO NOT RENT-$950 In-law Available for Rent (daly city) $950

This is in reference to the downstairs studio in law that is now for rent at 616 Saint Francis Ave in Daly City CA under the title listed above. The landlord, Michelle Olvera, is a non caring, non responsive landlord with many issues. Michelle, and her sister, Collette, throw parties every weekend and are constantly loud. Michelle and her sister play loud music at all hours of the day and night, and when there is a party the noise goes until the wee (5-6 AM!!!) hours of the morning. When I complained about the noise, they made noise continuously on purpose until my significant other and I were forced to move out. Living below them was like living in a frat house. In addition to the noise the bathroom floor was in great disrepair (see picture below), there was a sinkhole in the floor that was about 2 feet by 2 feet. ALL of the windows leaked in the rain, and the sink in the kitchen leaked like a waterfall. (BEWARE OF THESE MOLD CAUSING CONDITIONS!!!) When confronted about these various leaks Michelle Olvera again did absolutely nothing to fix them. If it doesn't affect her pocket she won't fix it and will expect you to put up with it. Our toilet was leaking for weeks and I informed Michelle Olvera about it and she did nothing until her water bill went up. She then proceeded to have a new toilet installed for herself upstairs and had an incompetent plumber/day laborer give us her used one downstairs. The "separate entrance" consists of a thin aluminum door that lets the cold in always, and would be easily kicked down by a fifth grader. (you don't get separate heating control either, you have to text Michelle when it's cold and hope she responds, IF she's home...otherwise no heat for you) Also, you do not have a separate mailbox, they slide your mail under your door. Sometimes it took up to three weeks to get our mail from them. Not having a separate, private mailbox is ILLEGAL, there would be a mailbox if she had a Cert of Occupancy for the apt. Michelle Olvera does NOT understand landlord tenant law, and will hope you don't either. Take my advice and find a BETTER PLACE TO LIVE! My significant other and I have moved into a WONDERFUL one bed for LESS then what she wanted for her hellhole. If you have any questions about Michelle Olvera or her lovely apt, feel free to respond to this posting.
