Khan has been acting in films since 1993; his most important role was probably in the 1994 Yeh Dillagi with Kajol and Akshay Kumar. However, his acting career went through a relative slump until 2001, when he was cast as Sameer in Farhan Akhtar's hit film, Dil Chahta Hai. This firmly established him as one of the industry's most bankable stars, and he followed it with memorable performances as a comic eligible bachelor in Kal Ho Naa Ho, a manipulative gangster in Ek Hasina Thi, and a light-hearted cartoonist in Hum Tum. For his role in Hum Tum opposite Rani Mukherji he received the Filmfare Best Comedian Award. He then won a National Film Award for Best Actor for the same film.
