Sadler's Wells

Sadler's Wells is a theatre complex on Rosebery Avenue, Clerkenwell, London. It is best known for its ballet, but contemporary dance and opera are also part of the repertoire. The venue is a receiving house.

The first theatre, Richard Sadler's Musick House, opened in 1683 and the present name originates from the founder Richard Sadler and the nearby end of the New River bringing fresh water to London.

In 1927 the theatre was rebuilt by Lilian Baylis, who moved her company from the Old Vic, and was the base for the Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet Company until it moved to Birmingham in 1990. The two theatres often shared productions and the in-house company was known as the Vic-Wells for that reason.

The current theatre is the fifth on this site and opened on 11 October, 1998 after being rebuilt with money from the National Lottery. As well as the 1,500 seat main auditorium it contains the 200-seat Lilian Baylis Theatre. Sadler's Wells also has a base at the Peacock Theatre near Aldwych.
