Running Scared is a 1986 action comedy film directed by Peter Hyams, and starring Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines.
Plot details
Ray Hughes (Hines) and Danny Costanzo (Crystal) are two detectives who are working Chicago's South Side district, attempting to put away Julio Gonzales (Jimmy Smits), an up-and-coming drug lord with aspirations of being the main kingpin of Chicago. After numerous failed attempts at capturing him (including one where they busted in on him while he was having sex with a woman, only to have to give up their pants when he took a neighbor hostage), they finally capture him - except that they almost died in the process, having fallen into a trap and needing to be bailed out by a couple of undercover detectives. Their captain (Dan Hedaya) then forces them to go on vacation for fear of burnout.

They wind up taking a vacation to Key West (Ray's excuse for picking Key West - "It's the farthest south you can go without having to speak Spanish."). Realizing the good life they could be having (by running a bar in the sun), they decide to retire - only to find out that Gonzales has posted bail. They pledge to re-capture Gonzales before they retire, being forced to work with the same detectives that bailed them out before. When they manage to intercept a large shipment of cocaine from Gonzales, he takes Ray's ex-wife Anna (Darlanne Fluegel) hostage, forcing a showdown in Chicago's famed State Building.
