Rudi Johnson

Rudi Johnson (born October 1, 1979 in Petersburg, Virginia) is an American football running back who currently plays for the NFL's Cincinnati Bengals. He was drafted by the Bengals out of Auburn University with the fifth pick of the fourth round of the 2001 NFL Draft.

Professional Career

Johnson saw little playing time in his first 2 NFL seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, playing just 9 games and recording just 17 carries and 7 receptions. With running back Corey Dillon, the Bengals leading rusher every season since 1997 and a 3 time pro bowler, as the starter on the team, his prospects for more playing time did not seem good.

But the following year, Dillon missed most of the season with injuries, and Johnson unexpectedly found himself in the starting lineup. Johnson took full advantage of his opportunity, rushing for 957 yards and 9 touchdowns, while adding another 146 yards on 21 receptions, despite starting just 9 games. His contribution helped the Bengals improve from a 2-14 record in 2002 to an 8-8 record in 2003.

Dillon was traded to the New England Patriots before the start of the next season, and Johson was given the roll of a full time starter. Johnson started in every game in 2004, and set a franchise record for most rushing yards in a season with 1,454 yards. He also scored 12 touchdowns and earned a trip to the pro-bowl.

Johnson is now considered one of the top running backs in the NFL and one of the main reasons for the Bengals massive improvement after their 2-14 season in 2002
