Ruby Falls was discovered in 1928 by Leo Lambert, a local cave explorer and entrepreneur, during the construction of an elevator to access the well-known Lookout Mountain Cave; the Ruby Falls cave lies above the Lookout Mountain cave along the same fault line in the limestone layer of the mountain. Lambert named the waterfall after his wife, Ruby. Public tours of the cave began in 1930.
