Royal Tunbridge Wells


 

Royal Tunbridge Wells (often called simply Tunbridge Wells) is a Wealden town in west Kent in England, just north of the border with East Sussex. It has a population of approximately 45,000 (2001 census) and is the administrative centre of the Tunbridge Wells Borough.

Famous inhabitants

The famous mathematician the Reverend Thomas Bayes lived in Tunbridge Wells, as did the novelist William Makepeace Thackeray; his house is now an acclaimed restaurant. Richard (Beau) Nash (social celebrity), Rachel Beer (first female editor of a national newspaper and the only editor of two national newspapers simultaneously - The Observer (1890-1904) and The Sunday Times (1893-1904)), Sir Hugh Dowding Commander Fighter Command for the Battle of Britain, Julius Drewe builder of the last castle in Britain (Castle Drogo), Léon Goossens (oboist), Enid Lakeman (advocate of proportional representation, Director, Electoral Reform Society) and Edward Bulwer-Lytton (author) are past residents of the town. George Cohen 1966 England World Cup winner, Jeff Beck (guitar player). Birthplace of Shane McGowan Punk Singer, Virginia Wade (Wimbledon Ladies Singles Champion 1977). Tom Baker and Louise Jameson of Doctor Who fame are sometime residents, as is comedienne Jo Brand (who also attended Tunbridge Wells Girls Grammar School, Jilly Goolden (well known wine taster) and Sir Paul Condon (former Commissioner, Metropolitan Police). As its name implies, the town is famously linked with Royalty. Many members of the British Royal Family have stayed within the town, especially when the Spa was a popular resort for the upper classes.
