Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
In Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Harry meets a boy in the same year as him, named Ron. On the train, Harry and Ron quickly become friends, and are later interrupted by a Hermione Granger (who Ron later develops feelings for). Though he does not like her yet, their meeting is very important. All three end up in the same house, and go on many adventures; Ron pledges to be Harry's "second," who will take over if Harry dies in a duel with Draco Malfoy. He also follows Harry to the Mirror of Erised, and to Hagrid's cabin, where he is bitten by a dragon. He eventually becomes friends with Hermione Granger after he saves her from a troll by using a spell she had taught him. She, in turn, lied for both him and Harry so they wouldn't get into any trouble. Ron's love of — and skill in — chess prove useful when one of the defences guarding the philosopher's stone is a giant Wizard's Chess board. Ron sacrifices himself (he later recovers) for Harry and Hermione, so they could go on. For his bravery and skill, Professor Dumbledore awards him house points, which later helps Gryffindor win the House Cup.
