He was a long-time driver in NASCAR's West Series and AutoZone Elite Division Southwest Series Champion before being named by Dale Earnhart to drive Earnhardt's Craftsman Truck in 1995, and drove for Earnhardt from 1995 until 2000, the last in the Busch Series. Hornaday won the 1996 and 1998 Craftsman Truck Series Championship.

He drove in the Nextel Cup Series in 2001 for AJ Foyt Racing, and drove for various teams in different series in 2002, including Hendrick Motorsports. He drove for two seasons in the Busch Series for Richard Childress, and moved back to the Craftsman Truck Series driving for Kevin Harvick in 2005, winning a spectacular finish against Bobby Labonte in Atlanta.
