Roman Britain
Roman Britain is the term applied to that part of Britain lying within the Roman Empire (which never extended to the whole island). This is usually thought of in relation to the period AD 44 to 410. Prior to the Roman invasion, Iron Age Britain already had close cultural and economic links with the Continent, but the invaders introduced new developments in agriculture, urbanisation, industry and architecture, leaving a legacy that is still apparent today.

Historical records beyond the initial invasion are sparse, although many Roman historians mention the province in passing. Much of our knowledge of the period stems from archaeological investigations and especially epigraphic evidence.
