It was originally called the Heart of the Midlands nightclub. In 1978 The World Professional Darts Championship was held at the club.

Still going strong after over 20 years, the first act to grace the stage at Rock City was U.F.O on the 15th of January 1981 . Since then the club has played hosts to acts such as Def Leppard, Musical Youth, The Cure, Paul Weller, Slipknot, Madness, Oasis, The Hives, Nirvana, The Stone Roses, Slayer and pretty much every other band in between.
