Ian Robert Maxwell (June 10, 1923 – November 5, 1991), British media proprietor, rose from poverty to build a large publishing empire, but was revealed after his mysterious death to have been stealing from staff pension funds on a massive scale to prop up his ailing empire.

Robert Maxwell was born J?n Ludvik Hoch in the small town of Slatinsk? D?ly, Slovakia, (now Solotvino, Ukraine) into a poor Jewish family. In 1939, the area was occupied by Nazi Germany. Most of his family was killed by the Nazis, but he escaped, arriving in Britain in 1940 as a 17-year-old refugee. He joined the British Army, where his intelligence and gift for languages gained him rapid promotion.
