Robert Gould Shaw III


 

Robert Gould Shaw III- (1898-1970) The only son of Nancy Langhorne(later Nancy Astor) and her first husband Bob Shaw. He is the only child of hers to have both his parents be Americans.

His life tended to be troubled. His birth father had a limited role in his life at best. He briefly served in the British military but his increasing alcoholism caused difficulty. In 1931 he briefly gained notoriety by being sentenced to jail on Britain's sodomy laws. This merited some attention due to his status of being Nancy Astor's son. He had long had suicidal tendencies and his life mostly went adrift from an early point. His alcoholism, the Profumo Affair, his mother's death, and the death of his half-brother William Waldorf Astor, 3rd Viscount Astor likely increased in his suicidal tendencies. Hence in 1970 he committed suicide.
