River Wyre
The River Wyre is a river in Lancashire, England that flows into the Irish Sea at Fleetwood.

Rising in the Forest of Bowland in central Lancashire it flows south through Garstang where it meets its major tributary, the River Calder, followed by the River Brock. Flowing west until it becomes tidal near Poulton-le-Fylde, it defines the north-eastern limit of the peninsula known as the Fylde. The ferry between Fleetwood and Douglas, Isle of Man departs from its mouth on the Irish Sea.

The Wyre actually starts as two rivers the Tarnbrook Wyre and the Marshaw Wyre,a pumping station was built in Abbeystead to help against flooding but during a visit a major explosion killed between 10 and 20 people.

It is the only river in England where you can see it's estuary from it's start it is crossed by a toll bridge at Cartford and another at Shard Bridge (now rebuilt and free.

The Lancaster Canal crosses on a small viaduct.

A pedestrian ferry runs between Fleetwood and Knott End but the ferry to the IOM no longer runs,it used to be a major source of brine for the ICIs Hillhouse works at Thornton while Fleetwood was a major fishing port with most of the dock filled in and converted into the "Freeport" shopping centre
