Rise to Rebellion
Rise to Rebellion is a 2001 book by Jeffrey Shaara that tells the story of the events leading up to the American Revolution, from the Boston Massacre of 1770 to the signing of the U.S. Declaration of Independence in 1776. Deeply steeped in history, it is nevertheless a work of historical fiction, relaying the events through the supposed perspectives of various key figures, particularly John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Lieutenant-General Thomas Gage. Throughout the book, each of these protagonists is paired with a woman, who was influential in his career: Adams's wife Abigail Adams, Franklin's English landlady Margaret Stevenson, and Gage's wife Margaret Gage. The books takes the debatable historical position that the American-born Margaret Gage was sympathetic to the cause of the American Revolution and supplied the rebels with military information until her departure for England.
