Founded in 1889 under the auspices of first headmaster J. O. Miller, the school was forced to move to its present location after a fire in the old school building.

Originally a single-sex male only school, it became co-educational under the direction of headmaster Richard Bradley. The school remains tied to the original Anglican faith, and a chapel was erected on campus in memory of Ridley dead in the First World War.

The school mascot is the tiger, and correspondingly, the school colours are orange and black.
