~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Initially, Savage was a guitarist, but switched to bass at the beginning of Def Leppard's career. He is affectionately called "Sav" so that there won't be any confusion between him and another Rick in the band - drummer Rick Allen. He is the only musician to remain in the band since they first began under the name "Atomic Mass" in 1977. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ His first 'solo' songwriting effort in Def Leppard - in which he was the lone songwriter of the effort - was on the song "Goodbye" and can be found on the group's 1999 album Euphoria. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
