By the 1940s the station had deteriorated to the point that it was condemned by the local council. Despite this, it was not until 26 March, 1960, that the present elevated station opened slightly west of the existing one. The bridges at each end of the station across Punt Road and Swan Street were also rebuilt to accommodate the ten tracks. The old station was demolished.

The condition of Richmond station was criticised again in 2005. Melbourne is to host the 2006 Commonwealth Games and Richmond station is the gateway to the main venues. The station's bleak appearance and poor access to these venues lead the Victorian Government to consider redeveloping the station. These plans were considered too expensive and upgrades will be limited to a new coat of paint and some new signage.
