After Gene Siskel, of Siskel & Ebert, died in 1999, Roeper was offered the opportunity to co-host the popular film review show with fellow Chicago Sun-Times columnist Roger Ebert. The show was shortly thereafter renamed Ebert & Roeper (after a brief stint as Roger Ebert & The Movies, which featured rotating co-hosts). Although this immediately enhanced Roeper's importance as a film critic, he has been criticized as lacking Ebert's reputation and skill.

Roeper caused a national controversy over a column he published in July 2005 wherein he ranted that the images of the women sized 6-12 in the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty were "too chunky" for him to look at in public. He promptly received a few thousand hate mails.
