Richard McKenna
Richard McKenna was an American sailor and writer. His most well-known work was The Sand Pebbles. The hero was an enlisted career sailor in the US Navy. McKenna himself served aboard a River gunboat, on the Yangtze Patrol but about ten years following the events in his novel.

McKenna served his 20 year hitch in the Navy, retiring shortly after World War Two. He took advantage of the GI bill to go to college, where he studied creative writing. He attended a small college, and, while there, he fell in love with, and married, one of the librarians.

In addition to The Sand Pebbles he wrote some science fiction. His short story The Secret Place won both the Nebula Award for Best Short Story in 1966 and the Hugo Award for Best Short Story in 1967.
