~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ In the 1970s, he moved from California to northern Idaho, where he founded the Aryan Nations, also known as the Church of Jesus Christ Christian, whose ideology is a mixture of Christian Identity and National Socialism. The organization operated from a 20-acre site in rural Idaho which became the center of a U.S. neo-nazi network with worldwide links. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Two individuals who had been attacked by Aryan Nations' members in 1998 successfully sued Butler; they won a civil judgment of $6.3 million in 2000. Butler filed for bankruptcy and was forced to sell his property. In the fall of 2000, millionaire Vincent Bertollini provided Butler with a new base of operations in a house in Hayden, Idaho. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ In August, Butler hosted his last Aryan gathering at a private campground east of Couer d'Alene. He was found dead in his bed, apparently of natural causes, on September 8, 2004; it is not known exactly when he died. In September 2005, the house in Hayden is scheduled to be sold at public auction because the mortgage payments have not been made by Bertollini, who is believed to be in Ireland, a fugitive from drunken driving charges. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
