Rhiwbina


 

Rhiwbina is a prosperous northern suburb of Cardiff, Wales. It used to be a separate village, and its core is still locally called "the village" and given a Welsh village appearance by Beulah United Reformed Church on the village crossroads.

It is bordered by the suburbs ofWhitchurch to the West, Llanishen to the East and Birchgrove to the South. To the north is Wenallt hill, part of Cardiff's green belt. It is topped by a radio communications mast that dominates the north horizon from all over the city.

Some streets were developed by the Garden city movement in the 1910s, including Pen y Dre, a half mile long railwayside avenue, which still today has the rare distinction of 2 successive local rail stations on the Coryton Line opening onto it.

There is a Norman motte called the Twmpath situated near Rhiwbina's northern most edge. Rhiwbina Twmpath

Around the end of the 11th Century the last native Welsh Prince of Morgannwg (Glamorgan), Iestyn ap Gwrgant, was killed in a battle north of Rhiwbina. The area is near the present day Butchers Arms pub. It was reported that so much blood was shed at the battle that the nearby stream is called Nant Waedlyd ('Bloody Brook' in English)

Rhiwbina means "St Ina's hillside". Naturally the population suffer constant ribaldry at the name's coincidental similarity to the soft drink Ribena, but there is no actual connection.
