Rex Whistler


 

Rex Whistler (1905 - 1944) was an artist who came to public attention in 1925 when at the age of twenty he painted the mural in the Tate Gallery restaurant in London.

Whistler went on to paint murals in Port Lympne, Plas Newydd and Dorneywood amongst others. His humorous style and mastery of trompe l'oeil gained him great popularity and he produced many illustrations for books as well as commissions for Shell and the Radio Times he also worked on scenery for theatrical productions. His paintings of the Devon village of Clovelly were used on a china service by Wedgwood.

Whistler was admitted to the Royal Academy, but was "sacked for incompetence" (Hoare); and then proceeded to study at The Slade. There he met The Honourable Stephen Tennant, soon to be one of his best friends and a model for some of his figures.

Rex Whistler was killed in action during World War II.

Rex's younger brother, Laurence, a glass engraver and poet wrote The Laughter and the Urn - the life of Rex Whistler in 1985; one of the sources from which these notes were made.
