Retina

The retina is a thin layer of cells at the back of the eyeball of vertebrates and some cephalopods; it is the part of the eye which converts light into nervous signals.

Retinal anatomy

The human retina has ten distinct layers:

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

  • Retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)
  • Photoreceptor layer
  • External limiting membrane - Layer of the retina that separates the inner segment portions of the photoreceptors from their cell nuclei.
  • Outer nuclear layer
  • Outer plexiform layer - In the macular region, this is known as the Fiber layer of Henle.
  • Inner nuclear layer
  • Inner plexiform layer
  • Ganglion cell layer
  • Nerve fiber layer
  • Inner limiting membrane
