Renfrew District (Sgìre Rinn Friù in Scottish Gaelic) was formerly (1975-96) the name of a local government district in

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

the Strathclyde Region of Scotland. Centred around the towns of Renfrew and Paisley, the district lay in the central portion of the traditional county of Renfrewshire.

When Strathclyde Region was partitioned in 1996, the majority of Renfrew District became a unitary authority region in its own right. Confusingly, the new region was given the title 'Renfrewshire', despite it being one of the three districts which constituted the traditional county. Of the other two districts, both of which also became unitary authorities, Inverclyde's name was retained and Eastwood became East Renfrewshire.

Also at this time, the towns of Barrhead, Neilston and Uplawmoor, which had previously been in Renfrew District, were annexed to the new East Renfrewshire authority. The community of Ralston, which was also due for transferral into East Renfrewshire, chose to remain in Renfrewshire, following strong protests which culminated in a local referendum.
