Red Barber

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Barber was primarily identified with radio broadcasts of Major League Baseball, broadcasting for the Cincinnati Reds from 1934-1938. In 1939, he became principal announcer for the Brooklyn Dodgers, a position he held until 1953, when he was hired by the New York Yankees. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Barber got his start in broadcasting in the 1920's while studying English education at the University of Florida. He filled in for an absent reporter on WRUF, the university's radio station, and read a scholarly paper on the air. After those few moments in front of a microphone, Barber decided to switch careers.
