Raymond Souster


 

Raymond Holmes Souster was born in 1921, in Toronto, Ontario. Souster worked with the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce until his retirement in 1985. He helped to launch Direction in 1941. He later collaborated with Louis Dudek and Irving Layton on CONTACT magazine and Contact Press. He helped to start the League of Canadian Poets and was the first president of the organization in 1967-72. Souster won the 1964 Governor General's Award in poetry for his book The Colour of the Times. Souster was named a Officer of the Order of Canada in 1995.
