Raymond Asquith


 

Raymond Asquith (November 6, 1878 - September 15, 1916) was an English barrister and son of British Prime Minister H.H. Asquith. Raymond Asquith was a member of The Coterie and a prominent young Englishman of the Edwardian period. He died on active service during the First World War in 1916 at the age of 37.

His sister Violet and her elder son Mark both became Life Peers, as Baroness Asquith of Yarnbury and Baron Bonham Carter respectively. Raymond's son Julian succeeded his grandfather as 2nd Earl of Oxford and Asquith. Other relatives include the late director Anthony Asquith (a half-brother), the actress Helena Bonham Carter (granddaughter of Violet Bonham Carter), the writer John Joliffe (grandson of Raymond Asquith, and nephew of the 2nd Earl, who edited a collection of Asquith's letters), and the late Liberal politician Jo Grimond, the Baron Grimond (who married Raymond Asquith's niece, a daughter of Violet).
