The movie was directed by Marvyn LeRoy and adapted by Claudine West, George Froeschel and Arthur Wimperis from the novel by James Hilton. The novel was first published in 1941 and has rarely been out of print since. The movie departs from the book's narrative in one very important way, but it could not have been filmed as written.
