From the beggining Quorthon pioneered a new style of extreme heavy metal which later became known as black metal. As the years passed his music changed into more epic viking metal.

Whatever the style it was apparent Quorthon was the Father of both the black metal and viking metal scene and will always be remembered for changing the metal world forever.

Quorthon was found dead in his apartment in 2004, cause of death apparently from heart failure. He was 38 years old and was known to suffer from heart problems.

For years there has been speculation and confusion over his real name, which has continued after his death. It is certain that the name Pugh Rogefeldt, reported in Lords of Chaos, Michael Moynihan and Didrik Soderlind's study of the black metal scene, is erroneous.
