The venue is principally used for chamber music, being one of the top chamber music venues in London alongside the Wigmore Hall and St John's, Smith Square. In the context of the South Back centre it is the smallest of a set of three venues: the Royal Festival Hall is a large symphony hall, and the Queen Elizabeth Hall is used for both orchestral and chamber music. The Purcell Room is also used for other events such as poetry readings.
