Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania
Punxsutawney is a borough located in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, 106 miles (171 km) northeast of Pittsburgh. In 1907, Punxsutawny and Claysville boroughs were consolidated and incorporated as Greater Punxsutawny. A high-grade soft coal was mined in the surrounding region. Formerly, the manufactories included glassworks, foundries, ironworks, machine shops, and planing, flour, feed, and silk mills. In 1900, 6,746 people lived here; in 1910, 9,058; in 1920, 10,311; and in 1940, 9,482 people lived here. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 6,271.
Demographics
As of the census{{GR|2}} of 2000, there are 6,271 people, 2,748 households, and 1,602 families residing in the borough. The population density is 708.0/km² (1,836.2/mi²). There are 3,042 housing units at an average density of 343.4/km² (890.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 98.79% White, 0.22% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.02% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. 0.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,748 households out of which 25.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.0% are married couples living together, 13.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.7% are non-families. 37.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.19 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the borough the population is spread out with 21.3% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 22.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 80.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.2 males.

The median income for a household in the borough is $26,250, and the median income for a family is $33,054. Males have a median income of $28,958 versus $19,076 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $14,802. 16.9% of the population and 13.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.6% of those under the age of 18 and 12.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
