~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ He was born and died in Tzu-ch'uan in the Shandong province and worked as a school teacher. He was a failed scholar and decided to give up his dream of becoming an official. He opened a tea house and invited his guests to tell stories, then he would compile the tales and write them. These were compiled into his Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio. The work has 431 tales and was instantly popular even though writen in the vernacular. The choise of subject matter, unusual/supernatural, was very strange at the time. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Many of his tales have been made into films.
