Provost (civil)

A provost (introduced into Scots from French) was the leader of a Scottish burgh council, the equivalent of a mayor in other parts of the English-speaking world. Since the re-organisation of local government in Scotland in 1975, the title of Provost became much more rarely used, the only exceptions being the Lords Provost of the major cities and the leader of Angus district council. Subsequently 32 cities were appointed provosts under the 1994 re-organisation.
