Progressive country
Progressive country is a subgenre of country music started in the late 60s which preceded and led to Outlaw country though it eventually became alternative country in the 1980s. The genre was inspired by the Bakersfield sound, honky-tonk, and rock and roll. The genre was singer-songwriter based including artists such as Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Billy Joe Shaver, Tom T. Hall, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Butch Hancock. (AMG)
