Princess of Wales Theatre


 

The Princess of Wales Theatre is a 2000-seat theatre located at 300 King Street West in the heart of Toronto's Entertainment District. It is named in honour of Diana, Princess of Wales, who was the wife of Charles, Prince of Wales, the heir to the Throne of Canada, at the time of the theatre's opening.

Construction began on the Princess of Wales Theatre on August 6, 1991. It was built by Ed and David Mirvish, who also own the Royal Alexandra Theatre and manage the Canon Theatre, both of which are also in Toronto. It opened on May 26, 1993 with a showing of Miss Saigon.

The Princess of Wales Theatre is designed to incorporate both traditional and contemporary design elements. The Toronto Star described it as "...a glittering glass jewelry case, a sparkling glimpse into a spectacle of total design." It is often used for study by architecture, engineering, design, and theatre students.
