Song Content

Primus is known for most of their lyrical content based around made-up characters or friends with goofy humor. But there are a small amount of songs with a message or political views. Here are some examples.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

  • Too Many Puppies: Is actually a war protest song, against the Persian Gulf War.
  • Those Damned Blue Collar Tweekers: Is about the (first) Bush administration.(actually 'Tweakers' is a song about the heavy use of meth amphetmaine by some blue collar workers. It is used in order to be able to work longer hours. Often times it is used by long haul truckers to stay awake during cross country trips. As the song itself states, "the flame that burns twice as bright burns only half as long....)
  • Sgt. Baker: About military expieriences, also somewhat anti-war.
  • American Life: A "song for the poor" about immigrants and unemployed veterans.
  • Bob: A suicide lament.
  • Southbound Pachyderm: Is actually about overhunting of endangered animals ("Southbound" is symbolic for "going down" as in "not doing well")

Politics

Many of these songs have poltical undertones, Primus's true politics are thought by most to be liberal, but a quote by Ler LaLonde states that "we pretty much go along with anything Bob Dole says", whether or not he said that as a joke (due to the fact that the band has bashed conservative viewpoints and the Bush administration in their songs) is unknown. Les Claypool is shown on Primus' Hallucino-Genetics-DVD stating support for Michael Moore's controversial 'Farenheit 911' documentary. He has also frequently made anti-Bush and anti-war statements at shows. Political views aside Primus fans remain loyal even when opinions differ.
