Pride & Joy

"Pride & Joy" was a 1963 hit song by American soul music legend Marvin Gaye. By this point, 1963 had become a banner year for Gaye. He had become responsible in the background musically for Stevie Wonder's first #1 pop hit, "Fingertips Pt. 2", and had had three hit singles as an artist up until that point. He had even started a dance craze with his song "Hitch Hike". As Motown's leading male artist, he hit his strides on the pop charts with this bluesy-oriented tune which Gaye co-wrote with Mickey Stevenson as a tribute to his wife at the time, Anna Gordy. The song featured the Funk Brothers and Gaye doing instrumentals and Martha & the Vandellas in the background. The song rose to #10 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart and #2 on the R&B Singles chart. It would be the first of eleven Top 10 singles Gaye would score on the pop charts throughout the 1960s.
