Predator 2

Predator 2 (1990) is a science fiction movie starring Danny Glover, sequel to the successful Predator. It was comparatively poorly received.

It is revealed in this movie that government Black Ops have been following encounter sites of the titular alien Predator-race, trying to find out more about them; they've figured out the pattern that Predators tend to stage their hunts on Earth anywhere that it's very hot and that has armed fighting taking place. The analogy that the Predator hunting humans on Earth is like a human hunter on safari fits well here: the Predators look for a region of fighting, searching for prey that has proved its prowess in fighting; for example, a human hunter would want to hunt the largest alpha-male buck lion it could find. Thus, the Predator in the first film hunted in a rain forest filled with guerilla-wars because it was in the middle of a swelteringly hot jungle, and because mercenary and commando forces were fighting there. It then observed a battle between US commandos led by Dutch, and proceeded to hunt Dutch as his prize. The government Black Ops unit theorized that Predators come from an environment with a much higher temperature, thus explaining this preference.

However, in Predator 2, an unusually high heat wave in Los Angeles coincides with a street war between rival drug gangs armed with military-grade weapons (Jamaican and Mexican drug cartels). Upon observing the best cop in the city (highest arrest record) win a firefight between SWAT teams and a drug cartel, the Predator begins to hunt him down as his trophy.

Predator 2 established several new facts about the Predators, and actually painted them in a somewhat less harsh light than the previous film. The Predators are something of a noble hunter, and as a code they refuse to hunt or kill any unarmed prey, sick prey, or a pregnant prey. Also, at the end of the film the cop chases the Predator back to his ship, and inside engage in a fierce close-quarters battle (the Predator armed with his wrist-mounted knives, while the cop was able to steal the Predator's "Razor-frisbee" and is wielding it like a gauntlet). After killing the Predator, a dozen more Predators decloak and surround the cop. But presumably because their comrade was defeated in a fair match, they let the human leave while attending to the dead Predator, even giving him a trophy in honor of his victory; a pistol from the lost Roanoke colony of the 17th century.

Further, one of the most interesting scenes in the Predator films occurred when the inside of the Predator spaceship is seen, including a "trophy wall", which includes the mounted skulls of various aliens they have killed, including mounted human skulls. Among them is a xenomorph skull, implying that the Predators hunt the monsters of the Alien movie franchise. The idea is often thought to have originated with this movie, but Dark Horse Comics published their first Alien vs. Predator story in November 1989, a year before the November 1990 release of Predator 2. A series of comic books, computer games, and now a movie called Alien vs. Predator have followed.
