Pragmatic Sanction of 1549
The Pragmatic Sanction of 1549 was an edict, promulgated by The Emperor Charles V, which established the Seventeen Provinces of the Netherlands as an entity separate from and coequal to the other Habsburg lands. It was largely in response to the break between the Netherlands and the German states precipitated by the Protestant Reformation.
