Post-invasion Iraq, 2003?2005
The post-invasion period in Iraq followed the 2003 invasion of Iraq by a multinational coalition led by the United States, which overthrew the Ba'ath Party government of Saddam Hussein. This article covers the period starting 1 May 2003.
Participating nations
As of September 2005, there were 26 countries with military forces stationed in Iraq. These were Albania, Armenia, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia, Georgia, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Mongolia, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Ukraine. Fiji is also present but under the United Nations banner. Well over 80% of the forces occupying Iraq are American. As of 15 January 2005, there were an estimated 153,000 U.S. troops in Iraq, not counting Special Forces. http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ops/iraq_orbat.htm The next largest contingent is that of the United Kingdom, with just under 9,000 http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ops/iraq_orbat_coalition.htm. There are also approximately 20,000 private security contractors of different nationalities under various employers.
