Building on the immense commercial success of her previous album Debut Bjork continued to pursue several different musical pathways although most could be classified as dance/techno. Producer Graham Massey was brought back after his work on Debut and further producers like Tricky (who was her boyfriend at the time) also provide some more trip-hop like effects on tracks like Possibly Maybe; it was these producers that gave Bjork impetus to create material like the storming Army Of Me, which eventually became the first single off the album.

Much material was produced during the album's genesis in 1994, including I Go Humble, which would later be released as a B-Side. Cover Me was originally recorded in a bat-infested cave in Nassau with a dictaphone, but was scrapped in favour of the studio version. The album also continued Bjork's fascination with covering old Hollywood standards, in this case the Betty Hutton track "Who Blew Out The Fuse" which eventually became the song "It's Oh So Quiet".

After Army Of Me became Bjork's first ever top 10 hit, and the subsequent release of Isobel (which did less well), One Little Indian (Bjork's label) scheduled "It's Oh So Quiet" as a novelty Christmas hit. To most people's surprise it reached number 4 on the pop charts in December 1995, even becoming spoofed by The Smurfs. Despite Bjork later disowning the song, it meant that future hits Hyper-Ballad, Possibly Maybe and I Miss You could go higher in the charts than previously thought. The Post album eventually went to number 2 in the UK album charts becoming Bjork's biggest seller in the UK. A remix album, Telegraph, soon followed and Bjork was now officially Iceland's biggest musical export.
