Popiel


 
 

Popiel, legendary duke of Poland immediately prior to Siemowit; not of the Piast dynasty, but of an earlier one. According to the chroniclers Gallus Anonymus, Jan Dlugosz and Marcin Kromer, as a consequence of bad rule he was banished from the capital of Gniezno and died eaten alive by mice (or rats) in a tower in the Kruszwica settlement.

The existence of Popiel is now proven to be only legendary, whereas the historians are still unsure about credibility of the chronicles mentioning about his followers.

Siemowit: Siemowit (also Ziemowit) was, according to the chronicles of Gallus Anonymus, the son of Piast and Rzepicha. He is considered one of the four legendary Piast princes. He became the Duke of the Polan tribe in the IX century after his peasant father placed him on the throne after removing the legenda...
