Polar Star (Novel)
Polar Star is a Crime Novel by Martin Cruz Smith, set in the Soviet Union in the late 1980's. It is a sequel to Gorky Park (Novel) and features former Investigator Arkady Renko.

After uncovering corruption in high places and being exposed to capitalist influences, Renko is dismissed and forced to accept a variety of menial jobs in remote parts of the Soviet Union. Finally, he finds himself gutting fish on a factory fishing vessel in the Arctic Ocean.

While he tries to remain unnoticed by the KGB, the body of a murdered crew member is pulled up in the vessel's nets. The ship's captain asks Renko to investigate on the spot, rather than go back into port.
