Pljevlja


 

Pljevlja (Пљевља) is a city located in Serbia and Montenegro at 43.36° North, 19.36° East. In 2003, the city had a total population of 40,000 (27,000 in the city). Pljevlja is also part of the Sandzak Region. More than half of those population of about 400,000 people belongs to the Serbian nation.

First setelment was founded by Romans on the Iliric ruins in I century AD. City was called Municipium S. ( S is the first letter of the city name that has been found in the ruins near Pljevlja's suburbia Komini ). Southern Slavs came to this place in VI century ad and build a city called Breznik ( Breznica) in the name of the river that runs thru city. Fist mention of the name Pljevlja was in the XV century. When turks came to Balkan city was renamed to Taslidza ( rocky terms ). Since 1580 to 1833 Pljevlja were the capital city of Hercegovacki Sandzak. Austrian army came to Pljevlja in 1879. Pljevlja were finaly free in 1912 when they become a part of a Montenegro. Main siteseens are Husein Pasha's mosque, monestery of Holly Trinity and the oldest High school in Montenegro ( high school " Tanasije Pejatovic" ).
