For Lyle, a Wall Street worker, it comes in the form of a roundabout involvement with terrorists and the federal agents investigating them. After a shooting on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, Lyle becomes privy to a vague conspiracy of violent radicals, and his curiosity (and excitement) draws him into their fold and into a sexual relationship with one of them. Pammy sets off on a sojourn with two gay friends. By the novel's end, husband and wife have totally detached from one another, with Lyle disappearing into the nomadic underworld of the terrorists and Pammy traumatized after her excursion takes a grisly turn.
