Plastic Letters
In 1977, Plastic Letters, Blondie's second album on Chrysalis Records was released. It contained two top ten singles, and was the last album to be produced by Richard Gottehrer. The opening track, "Fan Mail", is an uptempo song about an obsessive fan writing to their idol. The second track, "Denis (Denee)" was a cover of the classic 1963 hit, "Denise", by Randy & the Rainbows. The song was a big hit all over Europe; reaching Number 2 in February 1978 in the U.K. The next two songs, "Bermuda Triangle Blues (Flight 45)" and "Youth Nabbed as Sniper", sharply contrasted the overall sound of the first album. "Bermuda Triangle Blues (Flight 45)" was a slow, almost depressed number, whilst "Youth Nabbed as Sniper" had a dark, menacing sound to it. Next, "Contact in Red Square", was a James Bond/Spy sounding track, it was also a B-side to "Denis (Denee)" along with "Kung-Fu Girls" from the first album. "(I'm Always Touched by Your) Presence, Dear" was the second single from the album, reaching number 10 in May 1978. The song was written by Bass guitar player Gary Valentine, shortly before his departure from the band, just before the album was released. Other tracks on the album include: "No Imagination", a slow and dramatic number; "Kidnapper" a big hit in Japan; And the rock/punk "Detroit 442", the B-side to "(I'm Always Touched by Your) Presence, Dear".
