This borough occupying most of the northern half of the West Island, but its highly irregular shape is composed of no fewer than six separated pieces. It is essentially composed of the former municipalities of Pierrefonds and Senneville, but the Cap Saint-Jacques, Anse à l'Orme, and Bois de la Roche Nature Parks were transferred to the borough of L'Île-Bizard?Sainte-Geneviève?Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue. Consequently, the part of the borough that used to be Senneville is broken into two separate chunks, the main part and the Pointe Boyer area; and far western Pierrefonds has been split away into an exclave southwest of Anse à l'Orme Road. Two more exclaves at its eastern end of Pierrefonds were already separated by the then-town of Roxboro (now in the borough of Dollard-des-Ormeaux?Roxboro) before the mergers.

On June 20, 2004, Senneville voted to return to being an independent municipality, effective January 1, 2006. Pierrefonds elected to remain part of Montreal. It is not currently clear how the division of Senneville will be dealt with or how Pierrefonds will be incorporated into the borough system.
